Hodding Carter was a Baptist preacher who played a key role in the history of the American civil rights movement. His autobiography, "The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860–1880," was published in 1954 and is considered a seminal work of African-American studies. Carter wrote "To Dwell Among Friends," a memoir of his years as a preacher. In November 1983, Carter died in Atlanta, Georgia, at age eighty-five.
